Starting from April 2012 Tourist Association of Ivano-Frankivsk Region will launch the Action “Carpathian Culinary Heritage Network”. The Action will be financed by the European Union within the framework of the Hungary-Slovakia-Romania-Ukraine ENPI Cross-border Cooperation Programme 2007-2013.

The Action covers the territory of Ivano-Frankivsk Region in Ukraine, Maramures and Satu Mare Counties in Romania, Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg County in Hungary and Kosice Region in Slovakia.

Main project implementing partners are the Tourist Association of Ivano-Frankivsk Region and Ivano-Frankivsk City Council from Ukraine, Association “EcoLogic” and Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Satu Mare County from Romania, Slovak Chamber of Commerce and Industry from Slovakia and Szamos-bazár Association from Hungary. Associate partners to the Action are Technical University Cluj Napoca - North University Center Baia Mare, Ivano-Frankivsk Regional State Administration and European Culinary Heritage Network with its main office in Sweden.

Traditional food and gastronomy sector in the Action target regions embraces dozens of rural communities and small scale food related businesses involved in supporting traditional agriculture, catering, and tourism. These businesses are mostly reflecting local traditional methods of food production. This private sector together with culinary colleges and schools at present are the main custodians of the culinary heritage secrets and act as instructors to pass this traditional knowledge on to future generations.

Therefore the overall objective of the Action is to conserve and popularize the role and range of the different traditional Carpathian food products and cuisines as a catalyst for sustainable regional development and preservation of local cultural heritage.

Specifically, the transborder partners intend to unify the efforts and potential of local traditional food and tourism related stakeholders throughout the Carpathian Regions to promote the widely diverse styles and products, to assist to build capacity, networks and sustainable supply chains between the various producers and the public in order to meet the challenges and requirements of present day needs in the food and tourism industries; to raise the local awareness and appreciation of the potential of the Carpathian culinary heritage; to develop new business opportunities and support small-scale businesses operating in traditional food and gastronomy sectors in the project regions, and to reinforce the cultural identity of the target regions as Carpathian tourist destinations and promote each regions identity through culinary tourism.

Since every project target region has its own unique cultural identity as the part of the Carpathian traditional culture with the shared history, diversity of cultures and culinary traditions, the project becomes more important when four ingredient Carpathian cultures (Ukrainian, Romanian, Slovak and Hungarian) are networked within the Carpathian heritage umbrella and jointly promoted. Besides common work on our Carpathian Culinary Heritage will give participant regions opportunity to study each other cultures, to share the experience and build the firm partnership for the future development. Combining food manufacturing sector and traditional agriculture with tourism will bring more value to each sector and will help to preserve local traditions and nature, get more economic benefits to the areas and in such way will demonstrate and popularize the role of the culinary heritage amongst local population. The network itself will welcome other Carpathian communities from other regions to join and will create a model of cross-border neighboring cooperation.
